Braveheart



We have been watching Mel Gibson's Braveheart learning all kinds of things about historic events. Of course, not everything is accurate. On this blog, as a team, please post what you learned about the major players in the film. If you were assigned William Wallace, post your information. The rest of you will also post the info on your assigned historical figure.

  2. William Wallace:
    -Born in 1270
    -Very little known about his early years
    -In may 1297 he attacked the town of Lanark
    -He was a major leader in the Scottish Wars for Independence
    -In September 1297 he won a battle against the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridges
    -In late 1297/early 1298 he was appointed guardian of the Scottish Kingdom
    -In July 1298 the Scottish armies met in Falkirk
    -Wallace went abroad in France to help the Scottish cause and then returned in 1303
    -In his absence there was a truce with Edward I
    -The English king sent a large bounty for Wallace
    -In August 1305 he was captured and taken to London
    -In London he was hanged, drawn, and quartered, and his head placed on London Bridge and his limbs were displayed in Newcastle, Berwick, Stirling, and Perf
    -Hugh Cressinghen was flayed and his skin was used to make Wallace's sword belt

  3. Robert the Bruce:
    -born July 11, 1274
    -was leader of Scottish army during wars of independence
    -one of the greatest warriors of his time
    -1298 became a guardian of Scotland along side his rival
    -during a meeting in 1306 Robert killed his rival Comyn
    -after killing Comyn he resigned his position as guardian
    by

  4. King Edward I "Longshanks"
    -Born 1239 at Westminster
    -He was called Longshanks because he was so tall.
    -He was a Roman Catholic
    -Had an arranged marriage at 15 to an 9 year old, Eleanor of Castile, in Spain in 1254.
    -He had 12 daughters and 6 sons.
    -Survived an attempted murder in June of 1272.
    -Became king on August 19 1274, he was 35
    -Expelled all Jews form England in 1290
    -His first wife died in 1290, he married his second, Margaret of France in 1299, she died in 1307
    -He died on July 7 1307, after his wife, of dysentery
